The unusually wet weather Michigan—and much of the country—is experiencing this spring serves as a clear reminder of the importance of securing appropriate insurance coverage before an emergency occurs. Many members of our community are all too familiar with the devastating effects of flooding, having experienced significant events in 2017, 2020, and again in 2026.

For both homeowners and business owners, there are three primary types of coverage that should be carefully considered:

Key Coverages to Consider

1. Flood Insurance

Flood insurance provides coverage when water enters a building from outside—for example, through doors or windows. In many cases, this coverage is obtained through the National Flood Insurance Program (NFIP), provided the community participates in the program.

Important considerations:

NFIP policies are subject to a 30-day waiting period before coverage becomes effective.

Flood insurance is available even if your property is not located in a designated flood zone, as long as the county participates in the NFIP.

2. Inland Flood Coverage (Homeowners Policy Endorsement)

Many homeowners remember the June 2017 flood in Midland, which affected countless properties. In response to events like this, some insurance carriers—such as Auto-Owners Insurance—now offer an Inland Flood endorsement that can be added directly to a homeowners policy.

This endorsement is specifically designed for homes in low-to-moderate flood risk areas, where traditional NFIP coverage was historically expensive. It provides a more affordable option to protect both the structure and its contents against inland flooding events.

An inland flood may include:

Overflow of rivers, streams, or other inland waterways onto normally dry land

Rapid rainfall accumulation or runoff that does not adequately drain or absorb into the ground

Snowmelt or water carrying debris or mud, sometimes resulting in mudflow events

3. Water Backup Coverage

Water backup coverage applies when water backs up into a building through a drain, sewer line, or as a result of a sump pump failure. This is not considered flood insurance and must be specifically added to a policy.

Key points:

These policies typically are subject to a 30-day waiting period before coverage applies

Water backup coverage is especially critical for homes with finished basements or valuable lower-level contents.

Consider the potential cost of repairs and replacement if your basement were to flood—this coverage can significantly reduce out-of-pocket expenses.

How Do I Know If I Qualify?

Determining the right coverage depends on your property, location, and risk exposure. The best next step is to speak with a knowledgeable insurance professional.Contact your friends in the insurance business:

📞 Phone: (989) 835-6701

✉️ Email: info@ieuter.com

We are happy to review your current coverage, explain available options, and help ensure you are properly protected before the next severe weather event occurs.

A vehicle is one of the larger purchases most people make, and its value changes over time. While some depreciation is expected, certain factors can influence how much your car is worth when it comes time to sell or trade it in.

Understanding what affects resale value can help you make informed decisions throughout ownership and maintain as much value as possible.

Mileage and Usage

Mileage is one of the most significant factors in determining a car’s resale value. In general, vehicles with lower mileage tend to sell for more because they are perceived to have less wear and tear.

How the vehicle is used also matters. Consistent highway driving may be viewed more favorably than frequent short trips or stop-and-go city driving, which can place more strain on certain components over time.

Vehicle Condition

The overall condition of your vehicle plays a major role in how it is valued. This includes both cosmetic and mechanical condition.

Exterior factors like paint quality, dents, and scratches can affect buyer perception. Interior condition, including upholstery, odors, and general cleanliness, also contributes to value.

Routine maintenance is equally important. A well-maintained vehicle with documented service history is typically more appealing to potential buyers.

Maintenance and Service Records

Keeping detailed records of oil changes, inspections, and repairs can support your vehicle’s resale value. These records show that the car has been cared for and can give buyers more confidence in its reliability.

Missing or inconsistent service records may lead to questions about how well the vehicle has been maintained.

Vehicle History

A vehicle’s history can influence its resale value in several ways. Prior accidents, title issues, or major repairs may lower the value compared to a similar vehicle with a clean history.

Even when repairs are completed properly, buyers often consider the overall history when evaluating a vehicle.

Make, Model, and Market Demand

Some vehicles hold their value better than others due to brand reputation, reliability, and demand in the used car market.

Popular models with strong reliability records often retain value longer, while less common or less in-demand vehicles may depreciate more quickly.

Fuel efficiency, safety features, and technology can also influence how desirable a vehicle is over time.

Modifications and Customization

Aftermarket modifications can affect resale value in different ways. While some upgrades may appeal to certain buyers, others may limit your pool of potential buyers.

In many cases, keeping a vehicle close to its original condition helps maintain broader appeal when it is time to sell.

Keeping Long-Term Value in Mind

While resale value is not the only factor to consider when owning a vehicle, it can influence long-term costs. Simple steps like regular maintenance, careful driving, and keeping records organized can help preserve value over time.

Your auto insurance coverage can also play a role in protecting your investment, especially in situations involving damage or loss. Contact us today to review your coverage and make sure your vehicle is properly protected.

It made our day when we heard that not one but two of the young insurance professionals at Ieuter Insurance Group earned a spot on the Midland Daily News' 40 Under 40 list. Here's reporter Dave Clark's interview with our own Alex Ieuter.

Name: Alex Ieuter

Age: 26

Residence: Midland

Employer: Ieuter Insurance Group

Hobbies: I enjoy golfing, traveling to national parks and spending time with family.

Church, volunteer organizations: I am a member at First United Methodist Church in Midland where I taught Vacation Bible School for multiple years. I am on the NextGen Leaders of Michigan Committee helping to grow the insurance industry with the next generation. I am also on the ABC Great Lakes Bay Region Membership Committee working with many contractors in the region.

Describe a day on the job for you: Every day is different at Ieuter Insurance Group, which is one of my favorite parts about my job. My day could start with me driving to Freeland for a meeting with a prospect to see if we would be a good fit to work with each other on the insurance for their business.

After that, I could have lunch with an insured to catch up and see how everything was going.

Later on, I may be at my computer in the office working on answering emails from underwriters about any questions they had with businesses we submitted to them.

To finish the day, I go through my emails and any missed calls to make sure I answered all emails and returned all calls same day.

What is the best thing about working in your industry? The best thing about working in the insurance industry is helping people. We are there for our insureds when their child gets into a car accident or their house has a fire or their business has a pipe burst and is now flooded.

We get the opportunity to help people put their life back together.

Who are some role models or mentors who have helped you? There have been many role models to help me throughout my time in insurance. I am blessed to be able to work in an office with my grandfather, Cal Ieuter, father, Kurt Ieuter, and uncle, Karl Ieuter. All three have been extremely helpful in learning all the ins and outs of the insurance industry.

Who are some other notable young professionals in your professional network? I am extremely grateful to have a network of many great young professionals. Aaron Wiggins is someone who I regularly bounce ideas off relating to the insurance industry. Another person who I am lucky to commonly network with is Josh Roden, as we both enjoy going to events in the Great Lakes Bay Region. Drew Gandy is someone who I learn from, especially relating to financial services, and network with often as well.

What’s your favorite part about working in the Midland area? My favorite part of working in the Midland area is being close to so many family and friends. Midland is a great place to raise a family.

From attending a Loon’s game, golfing in the city or fishing on the Tittabawassee River, there is always something to do with friends.

Dave Clark is editor of the Midland Daily News. He joined the Daily News in 2022 after nine years serving as the Director of Student Media at Central Michigan University. He also advised the nationally-recognized student media company, Central Michigan Life. Clark previously served as editor of The Pioneer in Big Rapids and The Daily Telegram in Adrian. He also worked at The News Sentinel (Fort Wayne, Ind.), the Hillsdale Daily News and the Huron Daily Tribune. Clark is a Midland native and a graduate of CMU, Delta College and Midland High School.
Your HVAC system is one of the hardest working systems in your home. It runs through freezing winters, humid summers, and everything in between. Because it operates year round, small maintenance habits can make a major difference in how long it lasts. With the right care, many systems can run efficiently for 15 to 20 years.

Here are some practical steps every homeowner can take to extend the life of their HVAC system.

Change Your Air Filters Regularly

One of the simplest and most important tasks is changing the air filter. A clogged filter restricts airflow, forcing the system to work harder than necessary. This increases wear on components and reduces overall efficiency.

Most homes benefit from replacing filters every one to three months. Homes with pets, allergies, or higher dust levels may need more frequent changes. Setting a calendar reminder can help you stay consistent.

Schedule Annual Professional Maintenance

Even if your system seems to be working fine, an annual inspection is essential. A licensed technician can check refrigerant levels, inspect electrical connections, clean coils, and identify small problems before they turn into expensive repairs.

Preventive maintenance improves efficiency, lowers energy bills, and reduces the risk of unexpected breakdowns during extreme weather when your system is under the most strain.

Keep the Outdoor Unit Clear

The outdoor condenser unit needs proper airflow to operate efficiently. Clear away leaves, grass clippings, and debris regularly. Trim shrubs and plants so there is at least two feet of open space around the unit.

During winter, make sure snow and ice are not blocking ventilation. A simple visual check every few weeks can prevent unnecessary strain on the system.

Seal and Insulate Your Home

Your HVAC system works harder when your home loses conditioned air. Seal gaps around doors and windows, inspect ductwork for leaks, and ensure your attic is properly insulated. Improving your home’s energy efficiency reduces the workload on your heating and cooling system.

The less strain your system experiences, the longer it is likely to last.

Use a Programmable or Smart Thermostat

A programmable or smart thermostat helps regulate temperatures more efficiently. Adjusting settings for when you're away from home prevents the system from running continuously at full capacity. Gradual temperature changes are also easier on the equipment than dramatic swings.

Over time, consistent and controlled usage can significantly extend the lifespan of your HVAC system.

Know When It's Time to Upgrade

Even with excellent care, no HVAC system lasts forever. If repairs become frequent, energy bills rise sharply, or your home struggles to stay comfortable, it may be time to consider replacement. Planning ahead allows you to make a thoughtful decision rather than reacting to an emergency failure.

While you are reviewing your HVAC system and making improvements to your home, it is also a good time to review your homeowners insurance coverage. Major systems like heating and cooling equipment represent a significant investment. Contact us today to make sure your coverage aligns with the current value and condition of your home.

Every quarter, employees at Ieuter Insurance Group come together to support a local non‑profit, a tradition aimed at shining a light on the many resources available within the community.

This initiative not only raises awareness for organizations making a difference, but also reflects our company’s deep commitment to giving back. This quarter, Ieuter has chosen to donate $250 to Diaper Alliance, an organization dedicated to ensuring families have access to essential hygiene products.

Diaper Alliance partners with National Diaper Bank Network to address diaper need—a critical but often overlooked barrier to family stability. Locally, they work to ensure infants, toddlers, and individuals experiencing incontinence have consistent access to clean diapers and essential hygiene supplies. Diaper Alliance distributes well over one million diapers annually.

Diaper Alliance distributes diapers through trusted community partners such as shelters, early childhood programs, health providers, and social service agencies, ensuring dignity, health, and well-being for families who are struggling to make ends meet. Almost half of the Great Lakes Bay Region lives in the ALICE category (Asset Limited, Income Constrained, Employed). These families are working hard but earn a wage that does not allow them to afford basic needs. Diaper Alliance help to bridge the gaps in baby diapers, adult incontinence products and feminine hygiene products.

Read more about this initiative in this MSN article.

Your Friends In The Insurance Business at Midland's Ieuter Insurance Group can answer your insurance coverage questions.

Bringing a new baby home is exciting, but it also means taking a fresh look at your living space through the eyes of a curious child. As babies grow and become more mobile, they naturally want to explore their environment. Everyday objects and furniture that once seemed harmless can become serious hazards. A few thoughtful changes now can make your home safer and give you peace of mind.

Secure Furniture and Heavy Items

Children love to pull, climb, and test their limits. That’s why it’s important to secure anything that could fall or tip over. Dressers, bookcases, and televisions should be anchored to the wall with brackets or straps. Avoid placing toys, remotes, and other tempting items on top of high furniture to prevent climbing. As part of your regular home maintenance routine, check those anchors to ensure they remain tight and stable.

Use Safety Gates and Latches

Safety gates are one of the most effective ways to limit access to danger zones. Install hardware-mounted gates at the top of stairways for the best security, and use pressure-mounted gates elsewhere. Latches on kitchen and bathroom cabinets help prevent access to sharp objects or cleaning supplies. Don’t overlook toilet lid locks, either. These simple tools can make a big difference as your child becomes more mobile.

Cover Electrical Outlets and Edges

Outlet covers are essential in any home with young children. Choose sliding or self-closing options to protect against curious fingers. For furniture with sharp edges, such as coffee tables or fireplace hearths, install corner protectors or padding. These precautions soften the impact if your child stumbles and reduce the risk of injury.

Watch for Small Objects and Choking Hazards

If an item can fit through a cardboard toilet paper roll, it’s a choking risk. Be vigilant about clearing small objects from floors, shelves, and tables, especially if you have older children with small toys or craft supplies. Designate a separate area for baby-safe toys and playtime, and teach siblings to store their items safely out of reach.

Lock Up Cleaning Supplies and Medications

Store all medications, vitamins, and household cleaners in cabinets or drawers that are locked or out of reach of small children. Even natural products can be dangerous if ingested. Choose strong childproof locks and avoid leaving these items out on countertops or open shelving. If possible, store hazardous items in a room that children do not have access to.

Don’t Forget About Windows and Doors

Install window stops or guards to limit how far windows can open. Move furniture away from windows to discourage climbing. Use door knob covers or locks to keep little ones from wandering into unsafe rooms. For added safety, place pinch guards on door hinges to protect small fingers from injury.

Make Your Home Safer and Smarter

Smart home technology can support your childproofing efforts. Motion-activated nightlights, smart door sensors, and baby monitors with video or audio features help parents stay aware of their child’s activity. While these tools don’t replace physical safety measures, they offer another layer of visibility and control that can be especially helpful for busy families.

Don’t Forget About Insurance

While you are taking steps to protect your home and family, it’s also worth reviewing your home insurance coverage. Life changes quickly, and your policy should reflect your current needs. Contact us today to schedule a policy review and ensure your home and loved ones are properly protected.

Your Friends In The Insurance Business at Midland's Ieuter Insurance Group can answer your insurance coverage questions.

All fishing license fees will be waived for two days. Both Michgan residents and out-of-state visitors may enjoy fishing on both inland and Great Lakes waters for all species of fish. All fishing regulations will still apply.

A Recreation Passport will NOT be required for entry into state parks and boating access sites during Free Fishing Weekends.

Going ice fishing during the February Free Fishing Weekend? Make sure to review the ice safety tips here, and visit The Airborne Angler's website for the latest on ice conditions in the region.

2026 Free Fishing Weekend dates:

Winter: Feb. 14-15, 2026

Summer: June 13-14, 2026. The summer Free Fishing Weekend is held in conjunction with "Three Free" weekend, where residents and nonresidents can grab a fishing rod, ride the off-road trails and visit state parks and boating access sites - all free of charge. During Free ORV Weekend, Michigan residents and visitors legally can ride without buying an ORV license or trail permit. All other ORV rules and laws still apply. For more information about Free ORV Weekends, visit Michigan.gov/ORVInfo.

Want to know when future Free Fishing Weekends will be? The winter weekend is always the Saturday and Sunday of President's Day weekend and the summer weekend is always the Saturday and Sunday following the first full week of June.

Don't forget -- if you're getting your RV out of storage to camp at a state park this weekend, be sure to call Your Friends In The Insurance Business at Ieuter Insurance Group to add it back to your policy as a driving vehicle.
