All You Ever Wanted to Know About Insurance

What is a Qualifying Event for Health Insurance?

The world of health insurance can be a tricky place to navigate. We find that determining when you can or can’t sign up for various types of insurance can get confusing so here are some tips to help bring some clarity.

For individual insurance policies the only time of year everyone can enroll and/or make changes to their health, dental, or vision is during the open enrollment period which runs from November 1st through January 31st each year. Outside of open enrollment you would have to have a “qualifying life event” in order to get coverage. All of the following situations qualify as a life event:

  • Marriage/Divorce
  • Birth/Adoption
  • Death
  • Non-voluntary loss of current coverage
  • Becoming a US citizen
  • Leaving incarceration

If you do qualify for a change, you have 60 days from the date of the event to enroll in or change your coverage. If you think you may qualify for one of these scenarios, contact Corrie or Erika in our benefits department for a consultation. We're here to help!
