Sun and heat safety should be a priority whether you’re playing in the yard on a hot day or enjoying the sound of the ocean away from home. Ieuter Insurance Group and our friends at the National Association of Professional Insurance Agents (PIA) encourage you to take the following precautions when the heat index is high:
*Keep babies under 6 months old away from direct sunlight. They’re too young to wear sunscreen, so shade them or cover them with UV-protective clothing.
*Extra-vulnerable people (the elderly, the very young, those with asthma or other breathing problems, pregnant women, etc.) should stay in air-conditioned spaces when the temperature rises above 90° Fahrenheit. Check on neighbors who might be vulnerable.
*Apply sunscreen liberally, and reapply every hour. Your skin can burn even on an overcast, windy, or mild day, and sunscreen can wash away with swimming or sweating.
*Stay hydrated. The hotter it is outside, the more water you need to stay hydrated. Dehydration happens faster if you’re sweating, so drink extra water if you’re exercising.
